Waterspout documented over
SALISBURY BEACH Massachusetts

Newburyport Mill Building condo~
Visually straight across the Merrimack River harbor.
June 3, 2004 2:55 pm ~ 2:56 pm
Wild weather! Funnel-shaped cloud seen over Salisbury Beach. Some witnesses say they saw a
waterspout
(a tornado passing over water and picking up a column of water and

I
emailed the above image, reduced for the internet, to Todd Gross, the only
New England weatherman (WHDH) because I can always see how much he
enjoys a New England weather event. Todd used it on each weather
cast, on June 3, after I sent it at 5:25 pm . Calling it:
'This
incredible Newburyport image'

The next day I received this letter-
Mary, Todd G. kindly forwarded your amazing photo to me at the State
Climate office. This is so excellent that it should be
published in the
Globe and/or other papers and perhaps in meteorological
magazines, such
as Weatherwise or in an AMS journal.
I have always been especially interested in tornadoes and lament the
policy of denial that had been so ingrained in the Weather Bureau
and
now Nat. Weather Service. However, since radar, this
policy has
somewhat declined. I will foreword your photo to
the Nat. Wea. Serv
office at Taunton that they may incorporate the event in the
publication
"Storm Data."
I believe that on TV I heard this called a possible waterspout.
Not so,
as those occur only over warm water with the advent of cold air
overrunning. The sea is now cold and could not support a waterspout.
They usually do not have a great cloud development, but may
have a
modest cumulus cloud. There are the same as a dust devil over
heated
land, which may or may not have any cloud overhead. Yours was
definitely associated with the thunder cloud and was a tornadic
funnel.
If you have any further information, such as any wind damage,
I would
appreciate getting it.
Thanks again for your fortune in getting such a great shot.

Showing the tornado's storm formation.
(and will no doubt take a bit
of a moment to load -)
But worth every second for the detail of the
seething, twisting forming clouds. |
